Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am allergic to so called Sulpha drugs but when I asked a pharmacist about an antibiotic that had Sulfer in its chemical structure, he told me that it wasn t the same thing. Why is that? I am having the same type symptoms of my previous allergic reactions to this class of drugs.
hi, Sulfer is the basic ion and sulfa drugs are the derivatives of the sulfa salts. A person who is allergic to sulfer should avoid all kinds of sulfa drugs. However, the intensity of drug reactions may vary with each class of the drug. That is the reason why you are experiencing the similar allergic reactions you had previously with sulfa drugs. hope this helped.
