Are Fatigue And Weight Gain Signs Of Hypothyroidism?

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in late 2012. So bad I ended up in the emergency room. I was 56 and just hit menopause when that happened. I lost weight, my sight was affected, my heart was going crazy. Have been on Methamazol (sp?). 20 mg. a day.It took a while to get the meds correct and I did not want the thyroid removed... My tests since Sept. show my thyroid is now normal but I could swear I now have symptoms of Hypothyroid. Much weight gain (30 pounds), extreme fatigue.....etc. I went on a lowcarb no sugar diet for almost a month. My boyfriend lost 20 pounds, I lost 3......is it possible that the thyroid could test normal but that I m taking too many meds? I d like to start cutting back, just a little bit at a time to see if it helps with my weight loss and fatigue but I don t think my physician would agree since the tests are normal....any thoughts? Thank you. Dawn

Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
It is not advisable to cut down on medications without consulting your doctor. Thyroid plays a very important role in body. It controls almost everything that works in body including all metabolisms and normal functioning of vital organs like heart and brain.
Weight change is not as important as the other functions of body. Right?
Additionally you are comparing weight loss with a male, it is well known that males loose weight faster due to other hormones than females. You yourself have lost 3 pounds which is a good sign.
Keep checking your thyroid profile regularly and if the doctor feels that you are going in hypothyroidism he will modify the drugs accordingly.
So do not modify drugs yourself, you can ask for frequent thyroid studies to pick up changes early and consult your doctor for any change requiredin medicines.
Thank you
