Are Sweating And Shortness Of Breath Normal After A Workout?

When I work out (yoga, elliptical, pilates) I find that I am very sweaty and I experience shortness of breath. I have been told by an oral surgeon that I have a somewhat narrow esophagus (not stricture). I do have hypertension but it has been under control with lisinopril for many years. At the hight of exercise today my heart beat on my fit bit registered 134 bpm but I was drenched and breathing was regulated but at times there was shortness of breath. Should I be concerned and head to my doctor? I had an EKG 4 months ago in preparation for surgery (removal of growth from my vocal cords) and all was good.

Good morning and welcome to HCM,
You should be able to carry on a conversation when you exercise If you cannot carry on a conversation then you are working at too high of a target heart rate. before you start an exercise program you should really clear with your doctor since you have the risk factor of hypertension and are on lisinopril for your blood pressure.

To be on the safe side I would ask your doctor for exercise clearance and yes he may want to do a stress study on you and check out your heart before you do engage in any exercise since you are

experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath.

For your safety please make sure that you do a 5 to 10 minute warm-up and a 5 to 10 minute cool down . What I mean by this is you gradually increase your heart rate instead of just jumping into your routine and it's also important to keep well hydrated avoid sodium and start out slowly and progress slowly.

Also, a note on the side-if you take a multivitamin take separately from blood pressure meds as there may be an interaction.your medication also requires a sodium restriction probably around 2300 mg per day Salt and sodium are different which is explained in my blog on my website which you may find by looking at my profile for Kathy Shattler.

I hope I've addressed your question and if you have any further queries please feel free to write again. Sincerely, Kathy Shattler ,BS, MS,RDN on my iPhone-
