Hi there. Both Strontium Ranelate and Boron have been shown to have some beneficial effects. Strontium has been a new addition to
osteoporosis therapy with reduced side effects and has been approved in Europe for use.But it has side effect profile of
nausea, diahrrea and blood clot formation. Its useful for making the bones thick but it does not make them strong, there is a big difference between the two. Also it deposits on the bones and is denser than calcium so it can interfere with
DEXA scans which are needed regularly in patients with osteoporosis and give falsely high readings. Boron is a very useful
micronutrient which is present in adequate amounts in your body if you're having a good intake of fruits. 3mg/ day is the required amount for individuals who have low consumption of fruits with associated problems of osteoporosis. Its available in good quantities in raisins. almonds. avocados, currants and cashews. So you can improve your dietary supplementation of boron in that way. If you have stopped bisphosphonate(
FOSAMAX) therapy for sometime i suggest you start
teriparatide which has a very good pharamcological profile. It's available as subcutaneous injections daily and has reduced side effects. So if you want my opinion you can still wait before going ahead with strontium therapy, add some good dietary supplementation to get your boron levels up and consider adding teriparatide to reduce your overall osteoporosis related
fracture risk. But do discuss these options with your doctor before starting them.
