Are There Any Side Effects Of Using Glycometin A Tender Age?

My daughter, age of 13+, height 5 6 , weight 72 kg.s, has been detected with PCO, hormonal level and other parameters being normal (as said by Endocrinologist) barring Hb(9.2 mg). She had to visit doctor as she was manifesting body hairs and thin mustache. She has been advised to take Glycomet SR 500 twice daily. She is taking the same but is there any side effect of Glycomet at this tender age? She is not diabetic.S. Ghosh 18.09.14

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Glycomet SR 500 is Metformin 500 mg SR (slow release) is an anti-diabetic drug.
It is also used in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) that feature insulin resistance. It increases response to insulin.
A majority of people with PCOS have insulin resistance and/or are obese. Their elevated insulin levels contribute to or cause the abnormalities seen in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis that lead to PCOS.
Reducing insulin resistance by improving insulin sensitivity through medications such as metformin, seems to show effectiveness.
Dose:max, 2500 mg/day in divided doses.
Metformin has following side effects:
ENT: Unpleasant/metallic taste.
GI: Diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; abdominal bloating; flatulence; anorexia. METABOLIC: Lactic acidosis.
OTHER: Subnormal vitamin B12 levels
However the drug is well-tolerated by most of the patients and one is unlikely to have significant side effects with total 1000 mg/day as taken by your daughter.
