Baby Has Blood In Stool Which Stopped On Giving Soy Formula. Suspects Lactose Allergy. Recommendations?

Baby wasn t given intravenous fluids but was given pedialyte . After exams and cultures it was found that the baby had blood in stool but no indication of illness . The baby was given specialty formula to rule out allergy. Only after trying soy formula was the baby able to keep down any type of milk. After 36 hours on soy the baby s stool was free from blood and the mother will try a diary free diet for 2 weeks and then resume breastfeeding if possible. Pediatrician suspects lactose or milk protein allergy. Alimentum was tried but ineffective.

Pediatrician 's  Response
YOUR BABY IS UNLIKELY TO HAVE LACTOSE INTOLERANCE . MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSIS IS COW MILK ALLERGY. NOWADAYS, FORMULAS BASED ON AMINO ACIDS (AMINO ACID-BASED FORMULAS - AAF) OR HYDROLYSED PROTEINS ( EXTENSIVELY HYDROLYSED FORMULAS -EHF) ARE WIDELY AVAILABLE AND ARE GENERALLY PREFERRED OVER SOYA BASED FORMULAE. FOR BREAST FEEDING MOTHERS COW MILK PROTEIN ELIMINATION FROM DIET IS APPROPRIATE.
