Hi there, I really need some strong advice regarding my 6 month old daughter who has always been a typical spilly reflux baby. She spills often after feeds and solids but is in no way uncomfortable she s a very happy wee girl my issue is with random choking episodes that occur in the middle of the night .. Sometimes we aren t aware she s actually choking until we look at her struggling to breathe we have to pick her up swiftly and use first aid .. It s very scary. These episodes don t occur daily or usually 1-3 times a week. But I m getting very concerned as I feel they are becoming more frequent now she s older. They happen in between feeds usually during playtime or sleeptime or in her carseat.. Very random! What is this and what can we do about it? I can t have her sleep out of our sight as I m afraid of these and I ensure her bedding is raised and she sleeps in her side to help avoid higher risk. I m at my wits end and I m on edge now as I m afraid of her choking to death.
Hi
Choking is due to gastroesophgeal reflux in infants and some times structural abnormalities of esophagus and the tracheal development. If it is due to reflux prokinetic drugs like domperidone and positioning of the child in lateral position under monitoring is required after seeking the medical advise. So consult your pediatrician for examination and proper evaluation to rule any underlying rare problmes.
These episodes of choking, suddenly waking up from sleep, struggling to breathe - are all suggestive of gastroesophageal reflux. It is important to report this to your doctor. You are already doing your bit in helping by her raised bedding. Is she on medication to reduce the reflux. you could also give her small frequent feeds. this means you dont give her all the milk in one go, but stop short of filling her stomach up completely but feeding her sooner. If you are also top feeding her, the reflux will be reduced if you thicken the feeds.
