Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Baby Of Schizophrenic Parents Silent. Does Not Bable, Talk. Autism Or Mental Illeness Due To Parents History?
MY GRANDSON IS 14 MONTHS OLD. HE IS BASICALLY SILENT. HE CRIES BUT DOESN'T BABLE OR TALK. i HAVE MADE LOUD NOISES OUT OF HIS VIEW AND HE DOES NOT RESPOND BY TURNING OR JUMPING OR ANY REACTION. BOTH THE MOTHER AND FATHER HAVE SCHIZOPHRENIA MY DAUGHTER IS 25 WITH SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER AND THE FATHER 31yrs old WHO DOESN'T HAVE MUCH TIME WITH THE BABYS IS BO-POLAR SCHIZO. I BELIEVE HE IS DEAF OR CLOSE TO IT. COULD IT BE AUTISM OR ANOTHER MENTAL DISORDER DUE TO THE PARENTS HISTORY? HE IS A VERY HAPPY BABY BUT HE DOESN'T EVEN SAY MAMA. WE WANT HIM TO HAVE A HEARING TEST BUT THE MOM SAYS NO.
Thanks for writing to health care magic. I can understand your concern.
Your grandson requires detailed developmental assessment. This is required to rule out developmental delay. If there is any doubt regarding hearing his hearing also requires to be assessed with investigations like BERA and audiometry. If a baby cannot hear properly then he cannot talk.
So please consult your doctor for developmental assessment and hearing assessment.
Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty M.D.(Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics
