Back Of Head Is Flat For 3 Month Baby. Advised To Wear Helmet. Is Surgery Required? What Should Be Done To Help Her?

The back of our 4 month old girl's head is flat. we were told this should have been fixed by wearing a helmet by 3 mos. of age and that the skull will not allow the brain to develop correctly causing mental functioning problems. What can be done for this? Is this hereditary? What should we know and do to help her? Will surgery be required? What are the risks?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. However who has advised that the flat head needs to be fixed and it shall not allow the brain to develop. Certainly a doctor will not give such an advice.

You should not worry about the shape of the head. Every individual has a unique shape and it does not affect the brain development. Your paediatrician must be making a note of the head circumference and must be noting its growth according to the age. Be rest assured there is no risk and no surgery is indicated just for a flat head from the back.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

The main concern of a flat heat is to look for any abnormality of the underlying brain.

This can be known by doing neuroimaging like MRI brain.

If there is no structural abnormality in the brain and the development of the child is normal, and her head circumference is growing appropriately for the age, nothing to worry.

Be in regular follow up with the pediatrician for the monitoring of following things:

1.Head size and head circumference.

2.Developmental milestones.

3.Changes in head shape with her growth.

Continue wearing the helmet as per the doctor advise.

I advise you to consult the pediatric neurologist and neurosurgeon opinion.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
