Baker S Cyst Behind The Right Knee, Fluid Retention In Legs. Taking Lasix Everyday. History Of DVT. Suggestion?

I have a past history of dvt in my right knee (2) I am a 42 white male, I have had fluid retention and swelling in my legs with the right being worse. A year ago I was having pain in my left knee when I walked on it and saw an Orthopedic Surgeon who did synvisc shots which worked great , I have been dealing with aspiration pneumonia, this was the result of a botched open hernia repair, this all started with gastric bypass surgery, which was ok. the second attempt to fix the hernia resulted in the incision opening up after 7 days and long story short, 15 abdominal surgeries, and two years on a wound vac, left me a ton of scar tissue and adhesions. I have had the pneumonia 21 times in 2 years and currently see a pain management DR to deal with the cronic pain from all of this. Sorry so long, I was able to start exercising with a trainer in February after dealing with the pneumonia for two years, prior to that I was very active running 5k races and mountain and road biking 20-30 miles a day with no problem with either knee. I have had some pain in the back of my left ankle starting two months ago when I walked on it, about a month ago I started having more and more swelling and the pain started in my right knee when I walk, sit, even at my desk I can feel the strain, it has gotten worse and there seems to be a bulge that sticks out when I sit that doesn't on the left, The swelling gets worse during the day and swelling goes down some at night. I have been taking Lasix 20mg per day and wearing compression stocking at night to no avail. It is getting worse every day and my knee is also locking up, I went to the ER last night and they did Doplar and said no cause swelling hat clots and said see Ortho Dr, they did say I had a good size bakers cyst behind my right knee. If it is a torn meniscus or a injury to the knee, will the swelling be more local or can it be the cause of all the swelling? It's unbearable thanks for the help!

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Baker's cyst that you have is likely to be responsible for the pain ion the knee that you are having. If it is not infected then surgical resection is not needed. Local steroid injections can be considered for relief.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on your description, You have multiple comorbidities along with multiple symptoms involving both your legs.

* As you are having swelling in both legs, I cannot attribute it to DVT (as DVT was present only in right leg) and It could be PHYSIOLOGICAL dependent oedema which gets resolved once you keep your legs elevated.

* Presence of Baker's cyst byitself indicates a degenerated knee joint. A big sized bakers cyst perse can cause swelling of the leg by causing pressure over the leg veins and obstructing the blood flow.

* Generally, swelling arising out of a torn meniscus or any injury to the knee will be confined to the knee joint only.

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
