Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend had a gout attack two days ago she went to the hospital and they treated her. My question is about her diet as I am preparing food for she and her husband.. She is currently doing kidney dialysis (sorry) at home. She is very thin and I don t want to prepare something that would harm her. I am reading about this right now but is there anything I should avoid? Thank you for your time. She is 60 years old.
Give her a low purine diet. Foods rich in purine such as organ meats like liver, brain and kidney, meat extracts (stock cubes and gravies), fishes like anchovies and sardines, herrings, crabs, shrimps and other seafood must be avoided. Certain vegetables like beans, asparagus, cauliflower, peas, spinach and mushrooms also have a high purine content so its best to avoid these vegetables. Limit intake of meat and give low fat dairy products which are good sources of high quality proteins in the diet. Since she is on dialysis, you need to give her adequate energy and protein rich foods to prevent tissue protein from breakdown. If there is any fluid restriction, then you can give cottage cheese instead of milk. Make sure she eats small frequent meals and does not skip any meals. Do not give alcohol like beer and red wine. Hope this will help you to plan her meals.
