Bloated Stomach. Could It Be Fluid Retention?

Hi, my dad's stomach has recently become really bloated and hard after taking some medicine given to him by a general practitioner. He says it makes him feel always hungry. His tummy never used to be so large and hard. The skin is now taut, when it used to be a little more saggy and his tummy was soft and lumpy (like a typical fat person). Would it be gas or fluid retention? He has normal bowel movements and is not complaining of any abdomen pains.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
With the available described details, there appears to be possibility of dyspepsia with decreased gastrointestinal motility.
There appears to be high possibility of hypothyroidism; presence of bloating and skin manifestation suggests the diagnosis.
Dyspepsia is a collection of symptoms consisting of acidic belching, abdominal heaviness and bloating, gargling sound , excessive flatulence.
Your father should consult with internal medicine specialist/ gastroenterologist and should go for thorough check up.
He should also go for complete blood count, blood sugar, thyroid profile, and renal function test.
Your father should also go for urea breathe test for H. Pylori.
If Urea breathe test is found to be positive then you have to take complete eradication therapy for H. Pylori bacteria.
Meanwhile, he should also take proton pump inhibitors along with prokinetics.
Take care,

General & Family Physician Dr. Polash Sannigrahi's  Response
Hello dear,

The bloating of abdomen can be due to:
1. Fluid accumulation
2. Gas accumulation

Absence of pain in abdomen & having normal bowel movements rules out the possibility of intestinal obstruction.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper physical examination done.
Based upon that, appropriate management step could be taken.
Investigations like X ray, Ultrasound scan of abdomen, & contrast studies will be helpful.

Wishing your dad a Good Health.
Thanks & take care.
