My son is 21, and a marathon runner. He completed a marathon 3 weeks ago. 9 days afterwards, he went to the ER with intensely bloody urine (as he described it, he was peeing blood, not urine). Late stream blood, elevated leukocyte esterases, other bladder/ UTI symptoms. ER doc prescribed Cipro and sent him to student health services (he s a college student)--they concurred, but also made an appointment with a urologist , whom he saw today. He is still peeing blood, though not volumes--no pain. No kidney problems on CAT scan. Doc told him it is likely a broken blood vessel & scheduled a cytoscopy. Why would he have sympotoms of a UTI from a broken blood vessel? Are the 2 related? Why a broken blood vessel in the first place, and why (if related to marathon) 9 days later?
