Burning Sensation In Lower Gut, Gassy, Frequent Dark Stools, Feeling Of Missing Something In Meal. No Diarrhea. Any Ideas?

What is causing burning sensation in my husbands lower gut? It's quite central/ at his front. (He always passes wind a lot). The last two days he has gone to the toilet a lot for poos and wees, but hasn't had diarrhea. Stools are dark but he says not overly so. Feels run down and as if he is missing something in his diet. He has a good meal but the feeling of missing some unnamed nutrient returns. Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, it seems that your husband is having increased acidity and gas production.

He should follow some precautions like :-
1. Avoid spicy and oily foods.
2. Do not miss a meal.
3. Avoid smoking/alcohol, if any.
4. Avoid mental/emotional stress.
5. Do not eat fast and do not talk while eating.
6. Avoid gas producing foods like peas, cabbage, lentils, gram, etc.
7. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

He should take an antacid like Omeprazole 40 mg once a day before meals along with Dicycloverine after meals for abdominal pain.
If he is having loose stools, he can take an antibiotic like Ciprofloxacin 500 mg along with an antiamoebic like Metronidazole 400 mg thrice a day.
Probiotic will also be helpful.

I would suggest that he should be investigated for following :-
1. Stool examination(Routine/Microscopic and for Occult blood).
2. Complete Blood Count(CBC).
3. Serum electrolytes.

He should have light diet with less spice and oil and prepared under hygienic conditions.
He should also maintain his hydration.

If the problem persists, he should get himself examined clinically.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.

Hi ! Does your husband eat frequently from outside ? If it is, then it could be a case of food poisoning, specially amebiasis which is a very common infection in those who eat from outside places which also causes a lot of gases in the intestines with irregular bowel habits.
Please get his routine stool test done along with a occult blood test for dark stool.
He should also shift his dietary habits to more of roughage and enough liquids.
With all the reports, you are suggested to get him reviewed by your family physician for a physical examination who may prescribe him a course of antibiotics for the intestinal infection, which may relieve his symptoms. Otherwise, he may also advise him for ultrasound abdomen if need be.
Wishing your husband an early recovery.
