Burning Sensation In Stomach, Blood In Stool And Vomit After Taking Medicines For Reducing Uric Acid Levels. Diagnosed Gout. Discontinuing Medication Safe?

Hi, I have gout and have been prescribed medication to reduce my levels of uric acids. It causes a severe burning sensation in my stomach. I noticed blood in my stool and I've felt sick a couple times today and vomited twice and noticed blood in it too. Should I discontinue medication? Im worried that my gout pain will return if I do.

Hello and welcome to HCM,

What medication has been prescribed to you?
Allopurinol is the drug commonly prescribed for gout.
It is associated with some side effects like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache and drowsiness, etc.
These problems have to be treated symptomatically.
Burning sensation in the stomach can be due to regurgitation and acidity.
Symptomatic relief can be achieved by taking proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and domperidone combination empty stomach in the morning.
This will prevent the burning sensation.
Bloody diarrhea can be due to some infectious cause or a side effect of the drug.
Stool examination should be done to look for infection and it should be treated accordingly.
However, inform your treating doctor about these symptoms.
If very severe dose titration can be done.

Thanks and take care
