Hello,
Mild cerebral atrophy denotes a decrease in brain size and is a normal occurence as people grow older, but it can be due to various causes like alzheimer's,ischemia of brain,HIV infection etc.
Atrophy of brain may be localised in one portion or the whole brain.
Mild cerebral atrophy is called as grade 1 cerebral atrophy and the changes are minimal and mostly related to normal aging process.
Although not a cause of worry, but if patient has some problem like weakness or memory problem, then it is best to be under doctor's care and get the MRI repeated after six to eight months.
If no symptom, then no treatment is required but if symptoms are there ,then medication are given to stabilize the symptoms.
Control his sugar levels properly and encourage him to do regular exercises.
Thanks

Cerebral atrophy is a common feature of many of the diseases that affect the brain. Atrophy of any tissue means a decrement in the size of cells.Brain tissue atrophy i.e.cerebral atrophy describes a loss of neurons and the connections between the brain cells. Atrophy can be generalized, which means that all of the brain has shrunk; or it can be focal, affecting only a limited area of the brain and resulting in a decrease of the functions that area of the brain controls.

Many diseases that cause cerebral atrophy are associated with progressive impairment of memory and intellectual function.

Some of the common causes of stroke are:--
Stroke and traumatic brain injury
Alzheimer's disease,
Pick’s disease,
Senile dementia (age related)
Fronto-temporal dementia, and
Vascular dementia
Infectious diseases, such as encephalitis, neurosyphilis, and AIDS,
Epilepsy.

Diabetes usually do not cause cerebral atrophy directly. It is the multiple tiny infarcts in brain that lead to cerebral atrophy.Diabetes and hypertension are risk factors for stroke or infarcts hence it leads to cerebral atrophy gradually.

Mild cerebral atrophy can cause symptoms like mild memory loss, interfere with social and work skills, decreased ability to learn, seizures.

There is no cure for cerebral atrophy. Once brain cells have been lost, the damage is permanent. Treatment for cerebral atrophy focuses on treating the symptoms and complications of cerebral atrophy.

So it is important to keep blood pressure and sugar in control to avoid or slow down progression of cerebral atrophy further.Continue treatment with your neurologist with keeping things facts in mind.

Hope this answer will help you better.

Have good health.
