Hi My daughter got the BCG vaccine about three months now and on her arm where she got the vaccine there is a swelling lump that contain pus in it and it hurt her when we touch it. I just wanna know is it normal to have that side effect for that vaccine or do I need to see a doctor for that.

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response
Hi...this is called BCGiosis. There is a pus collection in the area and it needs an Incision and drainage by a pediatric surgeon. The pus if examined might contain the TB bacilli or organisms. But it will not require any anti - tubercular treatment as it is a bovine strain of the organism which is there is in the vaccine.

Thanks for the query.
BCG vaccine left the scar for life time.
Area looks indurated , swollen for some days.
But the pus should not be there, pus indicates the infection.
You can apply mupirocin cream or see a doctor.
Hope i helped you.
