Can Epidural Shots Cause Chronic Cough While Having Asthma?
I have adult asthma and am taking 3 nebulizers and several other meds for a chronic cough which I was able to relieve with the help of a pulmonary doctor. On Tuesday of last week, I saw the pulmonary dr. and was 100% fine. In the afternoon, I saw an orthopedic dr. for a epidural shot in my back for disks Lumbar 4 & 5 and the next day I am back to my chronic cough. So bad that my pulmonary dr. put me on 40 mg. predizone for 7 days and 10 mg. for 10 days and I think after that. Do you think there is too much steroids going on? that caused the cough to return so abruptly?
Corticosteroids are very important for the treatment of asthma. They are not supposed to cause cough. I can't say what the cause of your cough is at this point (whether it's an asthmatic attack or another cause like an infection) but I can definitely say that if your doctor believes this is asthma then taking corticosteroids is indicated. When inhaled corticosteroids are not enough, per os (by mouth) corticosteroids are given. Taking corticosteroids by mouth is not a good thing when you have to take them for too long but taking them for a short period of time does not do much harm in most cases. I don't see any connection with the orthopedic treatment though.
So in conclusion, corticosteroid treatment although it comes with many potential side effects is very important for the treatment of serious asthma and you'd better stick to your doctor's advice.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
