Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can I Take Deworm Medicines Even If I Don't Have Worm Symptoms?
Just wondering would it be ok to take a worm dose even if you don't actually have worms? moreso a precaution in case you do? would it do any harm? I'm thinking of buying a worm dose from a pharmacy. I suspect I may have worms although I don't know what type. This is because I work out regularly and eat a balanced diet while at the same time not putting on weight (I'm naturally thin)

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and welcome,
It is not recommended to take any antihelmintic medicines (medicines for worms) without properly diagnosing helmints (worms). These medicines have variety of side effects and may interact with other medicines or the food that one takes.
A person can gain weight when he/she eats more calories than he burns throughout daily activities. There are certain health conditions that may contribute not properly gaining weight such as undiagnosed thyroid problems (hyperthyroidism) or diabetes, digestive system problems (helmints too) may be a cause. Your doctor can easily detect those health problems with simple lab tests. Genetics also plays a role in poor weight gain. Certain healthy people even they eat more calories than they spent can not gain proper weight.
I hope I have answered your question. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
