Can Lasix Injection Cause Severe Penile And Scrotal Swelling In Older Patients?

On Tuesday July 1, 2025 I was given injection of Lasix at ER Dr s Hospital Laredo for High Blood pressure, fluids on heart & lungs. Almost immediately I experienced swelling of penis to water balloon type appearance & texture completely engulfing entire shaft. Not even 2 hours after injection was administered. Right now penis still encased as well as entire scrotum swollen almost soccer ball size. Am 63 years of age. Dr, nor Sanofi the maker of Lasix mention anything about this known severe reaction even though I have discovered it is not only known, it is found to be more likely in patients 60 years or older. Now Hosiptal wants to act as if it cannot be the Lasix despite it clearly is.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Severe penile and scrotal swelling in older patients after Lasix injection is a medical emergency. Yes, allergic reactions to Lasix (angioedema or severe edema) can cause sudden swelling in unusual places. Get clinically examined by your treating doctor or go to ER as you need to get re- evaluated. Such swellings can cause circulation to be compromised or may cause infection like cellulitis etc.

You need to be treated. Such a symptom is indicative of severe hypoalbuminemia, venous or lymphatic obstruction, worsening heart failure or sever kidney or liver dysfunction. Get examined and re-evaluated and also get blood tests (kidney, liver, albumin, electrolytes), ultrasound of the scrotum, etc. They may need to do blood tests (kidney, liver, albumin, electrolytes), ultrasound of the scrotum, and possibly adjust or stop the Lasix.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Nupur K., General & Family Physician
