Can MRI Be Performed On Person Having Had Colostomy?

My mother has had a colostomy several years ago. She is in hospital now for a stroke. The stroke has affected her speech and left hand side of her face. It seems to be a slight stroke. Whilst in emergency the registra indicated that the CT scan was inclonclusive ws to what type of stroke it was i.e. a bleed or a clot. Therefore the registra indicated that an MRI would be required to determine how to treat the stroke. I have now learn't that the radiology department has decided that as she has had a colostomy they will not perform an MRI on her. XCan an MRI be performed on a person that has had a colostomy? There may be a couple of metal clips inside her down in the intestine region. Is this the cause for the decision not to do an MRI? Your advice would be appreciated as I don't know how far to push this matter with the hospital.

welcome to Health care magic.
1.Very sorry for condition you are facing, MRI is contraindicated with the metallic clips - first thing the clips can misplaced from location, second - metal will cause dirty shadowing.
2.Yes any metal in the body is contraindicated for scan.
3.CTA - computer tomography angiogram would help in this case - presence of colt / blockage, narrowing. ( possible option)
4.A carotid doppler will help in sours of the thrombus - Presence of any risk factors in the carotid and vertebral vessels will narrow down the cause.
5.A good time based history will help in prefect diagnosis of stroke and type.
Hope it helps you. Wish you a good health.
