Can Naproxen Be Taken While On Warfarin?

My mom is 90 years old and she is on warfrin oral 2.5 mg per day. She is having a lot of pain in her right hip from arthritis. She has been on tylenol for the last five days. I would like to give her a 500 mg naproxen so she can get a good night s sleep. Is this okay?

Hello,

It's not safe to take Naproxen while on Warfarin. One of the common side effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Naproxen is bleeding because of their anti-platelet action.

So, taking Naproxen together with anticoagulant ('blood thinner') like Warfarin may cause her to bleed more easily. She may need a dose adjustment based on your prothrombin time or an international normalized ratio (INR).

She should consult her doctor immediately if she develops any unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, blood in the urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
