Hello,

I can understand your concern. Osteoradionecrosis is the common complication of radiation therapy when the radiation compromises the blood supply to the jaw bone and in deficiency of the blood and nutrition, the bone dies presenting as necrosis. This is the reason that a dental check up, prophylaxis with scaling and root planing and treatment of decayed teeth along with extraction of non-salvagable teeth is advised before radiation therapy concerning jaws.

Talwin that you have been prescribed by your doctor is an opioid or narcotic analgesic which works by decreasing the sensation of pain in brain and nervous system. Thus, you feel relief in pain sensation.

There are two treatment options for permanent relief of the condition. First is the treatment with hyperbaric oxygen which is nonsurgical approach and the other is surgical therapy where microvascular reconstruction is done to remove the necrotic bone and rehabilitate remaining bone with adequate blood supply. The treatment can be decided based on the stage of the necrosis and the upper or lower jaw involvement.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
