Can A Zostavax Shot Be Taken Before Radiation Therapy?

HI, I am an 84 years old female and I have just been informed that I must undergo radiation for two liver cancer sites. I had a liver resection in 2013 and radiation in 2015. After my radiation therapy in 2015 I developed severe shingles, despite a Zostavax injection about 8 days into the shingles. Should I take a new or booster shot of Zostavax before starting my new radiation in 10 days time? Geraldine

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can take Zostavax booster dose before starting radiation therapy. It doesn’t have any effect on radiation and it won’t affect the efficacy of radiation also. So you can take the shot with out any concerns.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
