Can A Large Fluid-filled Bump After Falling Down Indicate Underlying Fracture?

hi my 4 and ahalf month old fell off the bed onto o wooden floor 3 days ago. She stopped crying almost immediately. She did not throwup or seem excessively tired. Her pupils respond normally. She does have a really large fluid filled bump on the side of her head. I brought her to the doctor yesterday and he said that she seems ok but that it could take 2 months for the swelling to go down. at that point he would be able to feel if there is a small fracture to the skull. H e said not to worry. However i am terrified. the lump looks a bit bigger today than yesterday, diff parts of it are mushier than others. She definately feels discomfort when i touch it. What if it is a fracture? is there something i should be doing now?

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response
Hi...this boggy swelling is not due to fracture of the skull. Do not worry. I appreciate your knowledge about the danger signs of a head injury. What you are feeling as the mushy swelling is soft tissue swelling in the area at the point of contact. As your doctor has said it might take 6-8 weeks to completely settle down.

I reassure you that it is not a fracture. regarding your concern that it is increasing in size it might happen like this but eventually it will settle down.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
