Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother is 63yrs. of age, went in the hospital almost six weeks ago, with what they called a stomach bleed. Had part of his stomach removed, then had abscesses on the kidney then liver problems and now large abscess on the bowel. Has fungus on hand and toe nails, as had a lot of transfusions and now had a tracheostomy. Still has a lot of leakage from the stomach, could this be watermelon stomach.
Hello, The condition your brother seems to be suffering does not appear to be water melon stomach. A simple endoscopy with or without biopsy could have confirmed the diagnosis. Water melon stomach is an uncommon cause of stomach bleeding in elderly. Other than that all other features in your brother could be due to reduced immunity. Associated renal and liver problems are present, but not of infectious cause and is more of auto immune cause. Surgical therapy is usually avoided. Transfusion could have been advised due to increased blood loss. Its also called as gastric antral vascular ectasia or GAVE syndrome. Hope I have answered your query. Happy to help again.
