Can An Airplane Journey Cause Severe Earache In A Child?

hi Dr. my 9 year old boy never had ear pain but after a long flight, 4 hours later he complained of severe ear pain on both ears, a day later he hurts through the jaw and throat more on the right side. His pain reduces to about 3 out of 10 after a dose of children s Advil. ,Four hours later he starts crying again. Please, help me . what is going on so that l can help him better. Is the airplane the cause ?

Hi,

There might have been some amount of Middle ear discomfort from which he is taking some time to recover.

If he is not getting better with Advil then I suggest that you use promethazine which is a prescription drug before getting on the flight next time.

At the same time now you need to get him evaluated by a physician by otoscopy if he has got any infection.

Hi,

I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but the pressure inside an aeroplane can cause a tympanic membrane rupture although it is a rare complication. I would recommend that you get him tested by an ENT doctor.
