Can Arthritis Cause Toe Pain In A 71-year-old Women?

I have pain in my toes when I walk. The area where my toes connect to my foot hurts with every step I take. The pain radiates from my middle toes to my big toe. I walk about 3 miles every day, ride an adult tricycle (which does not make my foot hurt) and do Yoga most days. So far the pain is in my left foot only. Could it be arthritis which I have, and have had both of my knees replaced. I am a 71 year old female.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, osteoarthritis is one of the most common joint diseases in older people and may involve any joint, but usually involves the knee joints. To put it simply, the pain in your toe can be osteoarthritis, but unless a few questions are answered and an examination is done by a physician, exact diagnosis cannot be made.

First of all, you will have to see if it's a joint that causing the pain or a skin wound or any other problem. Secondly, you will have to see if the colour around the involved toe is changing to red or it's still the normal skin colour. This will tell of an infection in the joint called as septic arthritis.

Thirdly, you will have to see if there is pain to touch or on moving the toe joint. This will show if there is active arthritis of any type. There could also be possibility of inflammation of the tendon around the toe.

The treatment I would suggest will be the same as of osteoarthritis until you can get an x-ray of the foot to see the condition of the joints.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Talal Hussain
