Can Being Overweight Cause Excessive Sweating?

Hello. I am an 18 year old male with a bit of a problem. It seems that everywhere I go I’m sweating through my back. I could be sitting in the car, walking around, or excersizing, and I can never wear tshirts. I always wear plaid jackets over shirts or camouflage because it masks the pool of water that forms on my back. Sometimes it even sleeps through my sweaters. I am quite overweight, so could this be a weight problem that will go away given exercise? Or does this seem more like hyperhydrosis

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Overweight itself may not be the cause of excessive sweating. But being overweight can lead to other diseases like diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders which can trigger problem of excessive sweating. The most common cause of excessive sweating is called primary focal hyperhidrosis. Primary focal hyperhidrosis does not cause illness. Basically, you just sweat excessively. Although it is a medical condition, it's not a sign of disease or a drug interaction. People who have it are otherwise healthy. Experts aren't sure, but primary focal hyperhidrosis seems to stem from a minor malfunction in the nervous system. There's some evidence that it could run in families. Other common causes include

1. Thyroid problems
2. Diabetes
3. Alcoholism
4. Infectious diseases like tuberculosis
5. Stress, anxiety etc

You can try- Antiperspirants. Special over-the-counter or prescription sprays, lotions, and roll-ons which can help control symptoms. But if the symptoms are bothering you a lot then its better to contact a doctor and get evaluated in detail about any secondary causes for excessive sweating.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hyperhydrosis does not particularly effect a single part, its generalized more at periphery. Due to obesity /wearing tight clothes make you sweat. Kindly get your serum electrolytes done and drink plenty of water.
