Can Breakouts Occur Due To Consuming Amoxicillin Or Benadryl For Strep Throat?

My son is 12. He has what we think is an allergic reaction to amoxicillin, which he was taking for strep throat. He was on it for a week before having the breakout. I gave him some benadryl a couple times today but he s still itchy and getting worse instead of better. Anything else I can try ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
- Reaction to Amoxicillin is reported to be sometimes late in onset( More than 72 hours of starting the drug. If benadril is not effective, betamethasone pills are usually given.
- Similarly, non allergic rash is seen in case of Amoxicillin,
- Benadryl is itself an anti allergic drug,& allergy to benadril is very rare
- your child needs antibiotic for his streptococcal throat,& provided he is allergic to amxicillin,he needs change of antibiotic .
So for confirmation of allergy & change of antibiotic you need to reconsult his doctor.
Thanks
