Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my bilirubin is 1.6 ,although I do not consume alcohol.however i do drink almost 2.0 ltrs!! of cola per day and smoke heavily. Can drinking too much of coco cola and smoking be the reason for elevated bilirubin.?? I do not have any symptoms of Jaundice.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Increase in bilirubin to 1.6 is just above the normal range and it is imperative to know the whole liver functions including the direct bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, Alkaline Phosphatase and GGT to know the exact liver function as well as ultrasonography of the abdomen for hepatobiliary system. Drinking excessive cola to the tune of 2 liters and heavy smoking can raise the bilirubin levels. Also get an opinion of your Doctor and go for further tests as may be required as per clinical evaluation and reports of investigations.
