Can Contact Sports Be Played By A Child Having Horseshoe Kidney?

My boyfriend s 9 year old has a horseshoe kidney and his doctor says no contact sports, is this a normal thing for this problem? To me he can get hurt riding his bike, wrestling w his brother, etc etc. He loves sports so it is heartbreaking that he can only do baseball when he wants to do other ones too.

Hello,

As per my surgical experience, horse shoe kidney is not an absolute contraindication of contact sports unless there is active infection or febrile condition. However, every case is individualised and guidance is figured out considering multiple clinical parameters. Kindly discuss the pros and cons of the contact sports with his treating pediatrician during follow up visit.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
