Hi Doctor, I am a 73 year old female in pretty good health, I have had piles for years but they are very bad with lots of bleeding , I push them back most days whilst in the bath and am using cream and suppositories I have recently noticed a dark greenish colour in my stools, should I be worried ?????
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Since you have prolapsing piles that is hemorrhoids the treatment of choice is surely surgery so that the cause is removed. Take laxatives to keep the stools soft. Sitz bath helps reduce the congestion. Consult a General Surgeon for per-rectal digital examination, ano-proctoscopy so that the grade of piles can be known to plan for surgery. Since you are 73 years old it is highly advisable for colonoscopy as a rule. Avoid all the foods that cause constipation. Avoid long standing. As for the green stools, this is most probably indicative of an intestinal infection and not related to the piles. This may need a stool test and a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole and probiotics.
