Can Dehydration Cause One Not To Speak Or Respond When Spoken To?

I have a question about my sister, 32yrs old. She has not said more than one word since Sunday night, hardly drinks, and not eating. My mother took her to the hospital last night, and today after several tests, the Dr's have said she is dehydrated. Can dehydration to?cause one not to speak or respond when spoken

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Her unresponsiveness shows that your sister is highly likely were lethargic from severe dehydration. Dehydration happens when the body doesn’t have adequate water to perform its normal functions.

One can get dehydrated after excessive vomiting or diarrhea. Severe dehydration may cause lethargy (fatigue, lack of energy and unresponsiveness) and confusion.

Severe dehydration needs immediate medical treatment. Her body functions will return into the normal state after restoring lost water (rehydration).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Malik Amonov
