Can Depakote Cause Hair Loss And Its Treatment?

Hello, I have been diagnosed with OCD since I was in junior high. As such, I have taken fluvoxamine for many years. Recently I was prescribed depakote as well, which was described to me as a mood stabilizer. I found out that depakote can cause hair loss as one of the side effects, so I was wondering if there is another medication similar to it that does not have hair loss as a possible side effect. Any input would be much appreciated.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

First of all I should say that you won't necessarily lose hair because of depakote, there are many people who take it without such consequence, it occurs only in a small percentage. Even if it happens it's reversible once you stop treatment, so you might consider giving it a try.
Other alternatives which could be considered are other antiepileptics like Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine or Oxcarbazepine. There's also Lithium which is prescribed as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorders, but beware of its side effects.

I hope to have been of help.
