Can Generic Levothyroxine Cause Hypothyroidism?

Is the generic levothyroxine as effective for hypothyroidism as the brand name Synthroid. I had a total thryoidectomy in 2008 and take 212mg dose of Synthroid. It is just too expensive for my limited budget and I m wondering if the generic would be just as effective?
