Can Head Trauma Or Injury Cause Differently Sized Pupils?

I have had different sized pupils since I was a baby, and it has never been addressed by a doctor before. Just recently, however, my doctor wants to do tests because of possible head trama. It s not something that runs in my family, but I don t think it was an injury. Is it possible that an injury could cause this and it stay with me for years? What could possibly be causing this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In my opinion, your condition is benign if you're not having any symptoms referable to traumatic brain injury and no symptoms referable to what one would expect from someone with 2 different sized pupils.

If you were my patient, and if my motives were to get you tested (this many years after birth?) for whatever the reason, then my first notion would be to send you to an ophthalmologist.

There are MANY more cases of BENIGN and CHRONIC ANISOCORIA in the general population (that is it's not THAT uncommon) than are due to head trauma.

Secondly, I would ask exactly WHICH TEST is he planning to do? If you'd like to send me 1 photograph of your eyes (without flash) and 1 with flash, so that I can see your pupillary responses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
