Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can High Blood Pressure And Hypoglycemia Be Caused By Drug Interaction?
My husband is experiencing some elevations in blood pressure lately. He also has an upper respiratory infection and is diabetic. Since the start of this infection he was wheezing and is taking albuterol breathing treatments once to twice daily. His PCP put him on generic Ceftin 250mg BID daily. He has been taking Alka Seltzer Plus BID daily. My concern is that since all of this has been going on, there have been numerous hypoglycemic occurences in the past 3 days and the blood pressure is about 150-160/85-95. He is currently on Lantus 75U BID daily, Novulin 28U TID w/meals, Metformin 1000mg BID, Losartan 50mg daily, Verapamil 80 mgm BID, generic Paxil 30 mg daily. Usually when he gets an infection the BS become hyperglycemic. Am concerned that something he is using is causing the elevation in Blood pressure and the hypoglycemic episodes.
The high blood pressure and low blood sugar can be related to alteration in P 450 metabolic pathways of liver via antibiotic consumption for infection. However, a clinician is best person to co relate the current condition and cause for your husband particularly.
