Can I Go For Ovaries Removal Inspite Of Having Cervical Cancer?
I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy at the end of May (robotic) due to micro invasive cervical cancer with some lymph vascular activity, therefore some lymph nodes will be removed as well. I am 42. I have the option of also removing ovaries, but am told that is a personal decision, and not related to the cancer. I am very worried about going into menopause and all of the other things that may go along with that, however, I feel as though I should have the ovaries removed to lessen any future cancer risks. I would regret removing one type of cancer only to find in a few years I have another, when I had the choice to remove. Would it be careless to leave the ovaries intact??
Hi, As yours is Micro Invasive and in the initial stages, do not panic much. For women above 50 years and for those approaching menopause or who are already in menopause, we recommend removal of ovaries too. As your age is 42, we generally leave to patient's decision. But in recent times, women near to menopause sooner, and when the risk of any left overs/spread or recurrence is considered, its better to go for ovary removal in the same surgery.
Hi, Thanks for writing to hcm. Well removal of ovaries is not a part of the standard surgery for cervical cancer. As your doctor had pointed out, it is more of a personal decision. Yes you will experience hormonal changes and symptoms similar to menopause. The removal of ovaries as a risk reduction strategy to reduce future chances of ovarian cancer is only indicated in women with certain type of high risk genetic mutation (BRCA 1 and 2) not in general female population. Hope this answers your question.
Regards, Dr. Aseem
