Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I have been prescribed Propranolol for anxiety but haven t taken it yet as the leaflet included states that you should let your doctor know if you smoke. This wasn t brought up at the appointment before my GP perscribed it. Would it be advisable to take it anyway or hold off until I can get another appointment and talk it through with my GP. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi Propranolol is not advisable if you smoke cigarette. As Propranolol is known to cause bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways) in smokers, or patients with bronchical asthma hence it should be avoided. You may talk to your GP regarding this habit and ask him to review the prescribed medication for the treatment of anxiety. A safer but effective drug like Alprazolam can be considered which can be used in patients who smoke.
Hope this answers your query.
