Can Iron Deficiency Cause Sleepiness And Dizziness?

I'm a 40 year old female, not depressed but am sleeping 17 to 20 hours a day. This is not because of laziness, but it is hard for me to wake up. I get dizzy and am still half-asleep. This has been going on for 2 mos. A doctor said in Dec. '10 that I had iron deficiency anemia, but I started taking iron. Can that cause this? I'm 5 feet 9 and weigh 159 1bs.

Hello

I dont think iron deficiency anemia can cause excessive sleepiness.

The common cause for this is sleep apnea.

I would advice you to go for sleep-EEG study.
Drugs like modafinil(psychostimulants) will help. But these are prescription drugs.

Also consider losing some weight and avoid heavy fatty meals.

Thanks.
