Can Lower Potassium Lead To Swelling In Calves? How To Keep Potassium Levels Normal?

i was in the hospital and i was really sick-they told me that i had almost no pottasium in my blood labs and my left calf was all swollen really bad.Thats the reason i went to the hospital in the first place,i was very sick.I ended up in the hospital in the cardiac floor being monitored for my heart and was given an iv of pottasium for 4 days.My Dr. wants me to take pottasium pills every day. Can you tell me anything about this and how can i keep my pottasium normal. Thank you so much

hi, low potassium is rare in healthy individuals unless they have a tendency called channelopathy - an abonrmality in retaining potassium. if you have this heriditory tendency, you are likely to have further episodes which requires caution as there is risk of heart rythm disturbances. you need to take high potassium foods like beans, spinach, bananas etc. you also require potassium sparing drugs like spiranolactone 25-100 mg/day as required. make sure that you do not sweat much and keep in touch with your doctor. hope this helped.
