Can Milk Of Magnesia Be Taken While On Thyroid Medication?

I take a few medications. They are levothyroxin, edarbyclor, Contrave, levocetirizi, and metformin. I bought milk of magnesia for constipation. It says online that it could interact with my thyroid medicine. Is it ok if I take it with all these medications or should I not?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
Milk of magnesia should not be taken while on thryoid medication and Edarbyclor.
1. Taking the thyroid medication (Levothyroxine) along with Milk may interfere with the absorption of Levothyroxine and reduce its effectiveness. To prevent or minimize the interaction, these medications should preferably be taken at least 4 hours apart.
2. Edarbyclor (Azilsartan medoxomil /Chlorthalidone) taken along with Milk of magnesia, especially over a prolonged period, may increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. In severe cases, dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities can lead to irregular heart rhythm, seizures, and kidney problems.

3. Contrave (Bupropion /Naltrexone) & Metformin have no such interaction while taken along with Milk of magnesia.
Hope this answers your query.
