Can Nitrites In Urine Be Symptom Of Infection?

My 3 month ols baby has tested positive for nitrites in her urine and has traces of protein too. She was in hospital at the time after having a bout of gastroenteritis and reduced fluid intake. Does this mean she has an infection? They didnt talk about the results with me just said the sample had been sent for cultures?

Regarding the presence of traces of protein in the urine sample of your baby,it is very common finding of urinanalysis of children including babies less than 1 yr of age.So there is nothing much to worry about this result right now.But regarding the presence of nitrites,my comment is that presence of nitrite in urine highly indicates the presence of an urinary tract infection.Very few urine samples which test positive for urinary nitrites is devoid of infection. So it is very likely that your baby may have an underlying urinary tract infection which can be confirmed by the culture report.
