Can Severe Rash Be Caused Due To Handling Of Methimazole Tablets?

Yes, my husband has a terrible inching rash on his rt hand that is spreading. We think it might be from handling the methimazole tablets which he has to cut in half for our cats. Could the rash be caused by touching the medicine and not washing his hands right away?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query/. I understand your concern.
Skin side effects of Methimazole , like urticaria, itching, abnormal loss of hair are reported. Not likely to be caused by just handling of the drug with intact skin... only possibility being skin cut/ abrasion..OR it can be carried from some skin disease from a cat ( scabies) or allergy to something else
* Whatever the cause of the rash.. when it is spreading-
- Let him stop crushing the broken pill ( can use a glove )/ Can start with anti allergic pill over the counter like Cetrizine only once a day, till he can see doctor.
Visit family doctor for local examination/ needful investigations & treatment.
Thanks.
