Can Sodium Bi-carbonate Be Taken With Allopurinol For Gout?

Hi, I am currently on medication for high blood as well as taking allopurinol (150mg) for gout. I have been told that sodium bi-carbonate might help. Can you advise of the frequency that I should be taking this eg. should I take it daily say, one heaped table spoon with 250ml warm water and should I take it twice a day and whether I should stop taking the allopurinol while on this treatment. Thank you

hi
I have studied the interaction of bicarbonate with allopurinol.bicarbonates delay /reduce absorption of allopurinol so the spacing of dosing of each should be 2-3 hours apart-first bicarbonate followed by allopurinol 2-3 hours later.Do not stop allopurinol-just space it.
Best wishes,

Hello,

Thank you for contacting me at "Ask a Doctor". I will try to answer your question to the best of my ability.

I am not aware of any benefits of taking sodium bicarbonate. My personal recommendation would be to not take it at all. Continue the allopurinol and followup with your primary care physician.

I hope this information is useful for you. Please do not hesitate to message us back if you have any further questions.

Best wishes,

Adrian Rawlinson MD
