Can Stress, Edema And Water Pills Cause Rectal Bleeding?

Okay - thank you. I am a 63 yr old woman and have never had any problems with bleeding from my rectum. Over the last few months I contracted Pertussis and it went undiagnosed for weeks. I took Doxacycline, inhalers, cough medicine with Codine, steroids, more inhalers, finally a Zpack that got rid of the pertussis. I feel pretty weak still. About two weeks after I had finished the Zpack and then took the Tdap immunization shot my husband and I went on a trip that involved a lot of time in an airplane. The day after we arrived I developed edema (something I have never had) and i ended up taking water pills with caffeine - probably about 10 or 12 of them before I got better. Now we are home since Turesday night and on Thursday night I passed a large amount of blood (maybe a 1/4 cup) when I went to the bathroom. Something that has never happened. Do you think that the stress of my trip and the edema and water pills could be a cause of this bleeding??? I have scheduled a colonoscopy for next Tuesday.

Hi,

A stressful condition, edema or diuretic medicine may not cause bleeding from the rectum but it is a symptom that mostly happens due to an anal fissure, hemorrhoids and inflammatory disease of the rectum.

Inflammation can be due to infection. All of these conditions need differentiation and for that, a clinical examination is a must.

Anal fissure and hemorrhoids may require a surgery. For exact diagnosis, the condition demands several investigations.
