Can Swelling Of Tonsils Be Due To Sore Throat?

My dr and I are stumped.... I have a very bad sore throat (for 6days now) A few weeks ago I had strep, we ve re-tested and now my strep test is negative. Ive noticed white rings on my tonsil and for the most part the swelling is on my left tonsil. other than the pain from the sore throat i feel fine... Im a female 30yrs old and nursing an infant. any insight would be great!
