Can Taking Chrono 500 For Myoclonic Seizures Cause Severe Convulsions And Memory Loss?

My mom is 75. She was diagnosed 11 years ago with Parkinson s desease, but never got the real severe rigid symptoms but moreover difficulty and slow movements. After being on daily dosage of sinemet CR 1tablet twice daily and Sinemet 25/250 1 and a half tablet a day for some years now but taking them since 2011 more seriously she experienced getting convulsions. Was diagnosed my mykolonic seizures. So was prescribed a month ago to take depakine chrono 500. With a starting dose of 1 tablet twice a day her convulsions first calmed down but soon enough (3days after the onset of medication) we experienced more convulsions up to 5 times a day with a time period of 20min. So dosage was increased to b now: 1 1/2 morning, 1 afternoon and 1 1/2 night in addition to half of a tablet of keppra twice a day! I recognized a severe loss of memory all of a sudden. She s sleepy all the time! Is this normal not to know me (her daughter) all of a sudden??? In addition to very hard movement capability!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, it does. Common side effects of chrono 500 include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tremor, hair loss, weight gain, depression in adults, irritability in children, reduced attention, a decrease in thinking speed, memory defects.

Over the long term, the drug can cause bone thinning, swelling of the ankles, irregular menstrual periods.

More rare and dangerous effects include hearing loss, liver damage, decreased platelets (clotting cells), and pancreas problems.

Yes...it can also cause seizures. Seizure-inducing effects can be observed in the treatment of epileptic patients with antiepileptic drugs (AED).

An incorrect choice of drugs in the treatment of an epileptic syndrome or seizure type may provoke seizures (as for example the provocation of absence of seizures due to carbamazepine or phenytoin).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
