Can Taking Neurontin Cause Uncontrollable Crying And Violent Behavior?

My name is Norma and I am 63 years of age. I have suffered from depression since I was a teenager. I recently was diagnosed as Bipolar 2. I am taking effexor, lamictal, xantac and ativan when needed. Before that my doctor added neurontin which was given to me when I was admitted to the hospital. I had three consecutive episodes with uncontrollable crying and violent behavior. The last time I went to the E.R. they had to give me 5mg of Haldol to calm me down. Please inform me if the neurontin caused this side effect. I advised my doctor that I discontinued this drug. Since then I have not had any violent episodes. Thanks.

Hello,

Neurontin does not usually cause violent behavior or emotional outbursts. However, since you noticed that these issues subsided when Neurontin discontinued, it would be best to switch to another medication for whatever the reason Neurontin prescribed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
